Have you ever imagined what it would be like to design the motion graphics to go along with a designer in a fashion show? What if those assets were being displayed and edited live by a video DJ? Let me tell you about it.

My Role

This was a group project, there were four of us in total. In this class project we were assigned a fashion designer from the show to create motion graphics assets for. I was the main point of contact between my group and the fashion designers. I also created our timeline and self imposed deadlines so that we could share our process work with our designers. We split up asset creation so each of the group members created assets that would match with both the theme of the show, and the style of our fashion designers.

Theme

The grid is everything. It was based on the work of Massimo Vignelli and his grid centered designs. When brainstorming how to connect the theme to our designers we focused on the plaid pattern found in a lot of the clothes. Our fashion designers were inspired by companies like Burberry. We also focused on an muted academia styled color palette and delicate elements to layer on top. We ended up adding clothing tags and pearls as our delicate elements.

Ideation

We started by looking into academia fashion and trying to find other themes that fit in with that. We looked into some renaissance architecture, paintings, and frames. While trying to find ways to incorporate the grid I looked into fabrics, sewing, and thread. After talking to our designers more we added a delicate touch to all of the heavy grid work we would be doing. Pearls became the way we wanted to break the grid.

After all of our research and sketching we went with our ideas that were more focused on patters in the fabrics our designers would be using. We also stuck with our pearl theme and found a way to incorporate that as an overlay during the fashion show.

Running into Problems

The main challenge of this project was the timeline. We only had four weeks, and we were learned how to manage clients changing their mind days before the final deadline. We managed the timeline by setting up weekly requirements for everyone. During the first week we required all of the sketching and process work to be done, so that for the weeks following we could finish all of the assets and plan out the live show. I learned how to adapt under pressure, and how to ensure style consistency between four different motion designers. We insured consistency through the color palate, textures, and determining our overall design style.

Final Assets

All of my assets were made in either cinema 4D or adobe illustrator and then put together in after effects. These are short clips of the assets I made. At full length and speed some the assets range from between 10 - 30 seconds. Each asset is made to loop as well, to ensure smooth transition when being video dj'd at the show.
